Global Understanding

Environment

Children are taught about looking after our planet and the  importance of recycling, reusing and creating our own materials. Our approach is exemplified by facilitating recycling activities such as junk modelling, creating our own playdough, growing our own fruit and vegetables and looking after the animals on our mini farm.

Cultural Diversity

The children experience and celebrate a variety of different religions/cultures, throughout the course of the year. These festivals are celebrated by parties, carnivals, card making and positive display images. For those parents(s)/carer(s) that do not wish for their child to participate in these festivals, they will need to give the setting prior notice, so suitable alternatives can be arranged. Parent(s)/Carer(s) are more than welcome to join in these celebrations.

We encourage children to share their personal experiences through ‘show and tell’. Children also have access to photobooks and photographs of their parents and family members and are encouraged to share their thoughts, feelings and experiences using these visual aids. Our travel bear (Russy Bear) has travelled all around the world with the children of Ferndale. Parents and children share their personal experiences in their diary and are given the opportunity to give their friends an oral account of all of their new and exciting experiences.

Our Community

We have links with local services such as the Police Force, Fire Brigade and local schools. Parents are often invited in to speak to the children regarding their roles and occupations within the community which widens the children’s understanding of roles and responsibilities within society.
